THE GVROPEGRIPPER
The Mediterranean method of mooring stern to, picking up a bow line (often referred to as the ‘slime line’), that runs from a point in the fairway, along the sea bed, back to the quay, presents a number of challenges. The last of which, having taken the line aboard through a fairlead, using the anchor winch to obtain the required tension. There remains the matter of removing the line from the winch and making off to the cleat. Taking the torsional load off the winch
After placing the GV-Ropegripper against the Bulwark, or toe rail, the deckhand takes the bow line, through a fairlead, across the open jaws of the GV-Ropegripper and leads the line to the windlass or winch.
Having wound the appropriate number of turns of the line onto the windlass drum, the deckhand tails the line until the required tension is achieved. Then, holding the tailed line, applies modest foot pressure to the, anti slip, upper arm of the GV- Ropegripper, trapping the line in its jaws.
Then, without back strain, or torn hands or feet, through attempting to maintain tension, the trapped line can be removed from the windlass drum and wound onto the mooring cleat with the minimum loss of line tension, without testing the deckhand’s temper, earning the skippers rebuke, or suffering physical damage.
